Who is a Jew?
Written by Albert Cerussi
Thursday, 22 October 2009 09:48

It has been suggested that two subjects to never discuss with company are politics and religion because you never know who you will offend.

It is with enormous sensitivity and importance that we ask this question: Who is a Jew? There is sensitivity because this is a very personal subject to many people. There is importance because the topic of the Jewish people is a central theme in the Scriptures. If we want a clear view of the Scriptures and of God Himself, we should try to accurately identify who these people are.

The (real) Cause of Sodom's Demise - Part 1
Written by Albert Cerussi
Saturday, 25 June 2011 07:21

Every sermon I have ever heard about Sodom and Gomorrah has confidently asserted that homosexuality was the cause of their demise.  I have heard sermons chastise cities like San Francisco and other sexually promiscuous cities by referring to them as modern “Sodom and Gomorrahs.”  There is no shortage of laments about how “the gays” are taking over the country .  And I’m sure the recent passage of gay marriage in NY is going to add lots of fuel to many new Sodom sermons.

Let me be clear: Scripture in no way condones homosexual practice.  Engaging in Homosexuality is no different than engaging in adultery or pre-martial sex for that matter: all of these are violations against the covenant of marriage.  But the Scriptural legality of homosexuality is not the issue in this post: the question is why did God destroy Sodom?  It may not be for the reason you think.

Mailbag: Should Messianic Passover Seders be open to the public?
Written by Albert Cerussi
Saturday, 02 April 2011 07:57

I recently received this thoughtful question that deserves some important consideration: Should admission to a Passover Seder be offered to the public?  The original discussion of Passover indicates that it was made for families (Exodus 12:3) and that it was to be a holy assembly (Exodus 12:16).  If this is the case, why hold public festival observances?  Should pre-believers be allowed to partake?  Thus it is a good thing to ask how “kosher” it is to offer a Seder to unbelievers, let alone to hold one in a public forum.

I’ll spare you the drama: yes we have every scriptural right to hold public Seders.  How, you might you ask?  There are at least two main ways to address this.

Sermon Discussion Notes: A Paradigm Expansion: The Gentile Wing is Born (Acts 10:27-48)
Written by Albert Cerussi
Tuesday, 30 August 2011 21:24

Study guide and application notes for "The Gentile Wing is Born (Acts 10:27-48)"

You can listen to a recording of the original Sermon by Doug Friedman (20 August 2011)

Introduction: A “Paradigm shift” can be defined as a moment in time where we come to a realization or idea or place that changes everything from that point onward.  (Editor’s note: For an interesting view of how these ‘Paradigm shifts’ change the manner of thought in science, then this book by Thomas Kuhn is a ‘must read.’) Paradigm Shifts may occur at the personal level (as it did with Peter), but the ramifications can touch many others (also as it did with Peter).

Coherence Week 3 (June 2011) Notes
Written by Albert Cerussi
Monday, 20 June 2011 04:53

In week 3 of our Coherence Ministry Training Class, we discussed mankind as he/she is described in the Bible.  In the first part, we talked about how God made us in his image, how He made both male and female, and how God carved out (adopted) a people for Himself (a.k.a, the Jewish People).

In the second half we talked about things nobody likes to think about: sin, death and judgment.  Most people really struggle with that last topic: judgment.  I have been asked before why such controversial topics are covered in this course.  Wouldn't it be better, it is argued, to focus on the lovingkindness (chessed) of God rather than his wrath?

Virtual Gleaning
Written by Albert Cerussi

Unemployment is at record highs. People are losing their homes. Consumer confidence is dropping by the minute. Many are in despair and feel powerless and depressed. What can be done?

The answer is simple: we can tithe! But this is not the “tithe” you think it is.
