Study guide and application notes for "The Gentile Wing is Born (Acts 10:27-48)" You can listen to a recording of the original Sermon by Doug Friedman (20 August 2011)
Introduction: A “Paradigm shift” can be defined as a moment in time where we come to a realization or idea or place that changes everything from that point onward. (Editor’s note: For an interesting view of how these ‘Paradigm shifts’ change the manner of thought in science, then this book by Thomas Kuhn is a ‘must read.’) Paradigm Shifts may occur at the personal level (as it did with Peter), but the ramifications can touch many others (also as it did with Peter).
What did Peter now realize in Joppa? (Acts 10:34-36)
How do you think this realization affected (or would affect) the Jerusalem Congregation? (see verses 10:10:47-48 and read through Acts 15:1-35)
Where in the Tanakh do we find that “Jews should not associate with Gentiles” (Acts 10:28 – make sure to listen to the sermon to find the answer)?
Application:Paradigm shifts are not only regulated to the original Apostles of the Messiah. Can you think of a “Paradigm shift” in your own life? What did you realize at the time?
How did your life change?
What evidence can you provide that this change has taken root? Or were the results temporary?
Some Jews in Peter’s time may have been uncomfortable bringing the Gospel to the Gentiles. Gentiles have not always treated Jews very well, and it is important to note that during the time described in Acts Israel was occupied by a Roman garrison. Thus hesitance to minister to Gentiles could understandably be met with a tepid response. Are there people you would feel uncomfortable about sharing the Gospel with, perhaps individuals or groups?
Do you think that the vision God gave to Peter applies to your situation? (Acts 10:9-16)
Doug displayed the following quote: “We don’t have faith because we do what is right, we do what is right because we have faith.” Comment on what you think this quote means.
