A Theory on the Demise of Ananias and Sapphira
Written by Albert Cerussi

Acts 5 recalls the story of Ananias and Sapphira who are a rather infamous couple.  They have the dubious distinction of being the earliest “martyrs” of the faith of Yeshua – believers who died, but for the for the wrong reason, and in shameful fashion to boot (compare their demise with that of Stephen in Acts 6).

We know why G-d took them: Ananias and Sapphira sold a field they had owned and donated the funds to the Apostles.  However, they lied about the price.  We know it was bad for them to lie –this is a given.  But what we don’t know, or rather what Scripture does not say explicitly, is why they were judged so quickly and definitively.

Is it wrong to seek evidence that G-d has done a miracle?
Written by Albert Cerussi

One contention that occurs within the body of Messiah is the degree of “signs and wonders” we should expect to see as believers in Yeshua. On one extreme are the “cessationists” who believe there are no miraculous signs for today. On the other extreme are the “full-blown charismatics” who believe that miraculous signs should be occurring daily. And there are some positions at different levels in between these two extremes. What is a Messianic believer to do?

The Academic Side of Theology
Written by Albert Cerussi

I was recently listening to a news report about (then) Cardinal Ratzinger, who is currently the pope of Catholicism. To be clear, Messianic Congregations do not accept the authority of a pope – nowhere in Scripture do we find such a concept. That aside, one element of the report caught my attention because it applies to all those who profess Messiah Yeshua. In my experience, it applies to any Evangelical congregation, be it Messianic, Baptist or otherwise.

Responding to foolishness
Written by Albert Cerussi

You receive a harassing email. Or perhaps a disturbing phone call left on voicemail. Maybe at your congregation someone is constantly trying to get you into a theological debate. Or maybe you have a co-worker who is so opinionated it is painful to even say “hello” without a battle.

Do you know people like this? How should you respond to a person such as those described above?

Mailbag: Does Acts 10:11 overturn kosher (i.e., dietary) laws?
Written by Albert Cerussi

We have received lots of great questions over the last few weeks via email and Facebook, so I will take some time to address them.  Acts 10:11 is a great starting point.

In this passage, Peter is about to be sent by God to visit Cornelius, who is a Gentile (i.e., non-Jewish) believer in God.  Prior to their encounter, Peter has a vision where a sheet comes down from heaven.  The sheet is filled with animals, and we can guess it contained clean and unclean animals because not all four-footed animals were unclean (Acts 10:10-11).

After an exchange between a voice, presumably God, and Peter, we arrive at the conclusion of the vision “What God has made clean, you must not call common (Acts 10:15).”  But what on earth did this mean?
